1-Gallon Flatwood Plum (Prunus umbellata)

Description: A hardy, native tree producing small, fragrant white flowers in spring and tart plums perfect for wildlife.

Planting Instructions:

  • Location: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil.
  • Steps:
    1. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
    2. Place the tree so the base of the trunk is level with the ground.
    3. Backfill with soil, pressing lightly to remove air pockets.
    4. Water deeply after planting.

Care Tips:

  • Watering: Water regularly for the first 2-3 months to establish roots. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
  • Mulching: Add 2-3 inches of mulch around the base (avoid touching the trunk).
  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches.
  • Spacing: Plant 12-15 feet apart for proper growth.

1-Gallon Florida Orange Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)

Description: A vibrant native perennial with bright orange flowers that attract butterflies, including Monarchs.

Planting Instructions:

  • Location: Full sun for at least 6 hours a day.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Avoid overly rich or wet soils.
  • Steps:
    1. Loosen the soil and dig a hole the same depth as the root ball.
    2. Place the plant, backfill with soil, and press lightly.
    3. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips:

  • Watering: Water lightly but consistently while establishing roots. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
  • Mulching: Use a thin layer of mulch to retain moisture.
  • Pruning: Cut back in late winter to encourage new growth.
  • Spacing: Space plants 18-24 inches apart for proper airflow.
  • Wildlife: Excellent for pollinators—bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds love it!

1-Gallon Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria)

Description: A versatile, evergreen native shrub or small tree with glossy green leaves and red berries that attract birds.

Planting Instructions:

  • Location: Full sun to partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained sandy, loamy, or clay soil. Tolerates a range of conditions.
  • Steps:
    1. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
    2. Place the plant, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the ground.
    3. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly.

Care Tips:

  • Watering: Water regularly for the first 2 months to establish roots. Once established, it’s drought-tolerant.
  • Mulching: Apply 2-3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Pruning: Lightly prune in winter or early spring to shape or control size.
  • Spacing: Space 8-10 feet apart for hedges or individual growth.
  • Wildlife: Birds enjoy the berries, and the dense foliage provides shelter.
